“Conflict Resolution and Democracy”

With Dr. Uki Maroshek-Klarman

Due to popular demand, the Adam Institute has opened its fourth course in Conflict Resolution and Democracy.

The course comprises six two-hour sessions in English that will be held on the following Tuesdays in April, May and June:

April 20th, 27th, May 4th, 11thJune 1st, June 8th

TIME: 18.30- 20.30 CET; 19.30-21.30 JERUSALEM time

Around the world, conflict resolution is a popular realm taught in many arenas. The aim can be to resolve conflicts that arise in various arenas: economic, state, political, and others. Traditionally, these methods are not taught as an integral part of democratic language and worldview.  Equality isn’t necessarily their goal or interest.  In contrast, the Adam Institute studies these very methods through the prism of the principles of democracy, such as equality and freedom.  Are democratic methods for decision-making suited to conflict resolution? Are majority-rule and coalitions effective ways to resolve conflict?

In this seminar, we’ll learn four methods of conflict resolution. We’ll examine how effective democratic tools for decision-making are at resolving conflict, such as compromises. We’ll discuss the essential differences between methods of resolving disputes based on equality versus methods that are not based on this principle. We’ll explore the difference between methods for conflict resolution based on gender equality, and those that are not committed to it and other relevant topics. Do they successfully resolve conflicts in accordance with democratic principles? Are these methods effective for conflict resolution?

The course will be taught via interactive workshops, employing the Adam Institute’s signature “Betzavta – the Adam Institute’s Facilitation Method“, taught by its creator, Dr. Uki Maroshek-Klarman. The award-winning “Betzavta” method is rooted in an empirical approach to civic education, interpersonal communication and conflict resolution.

Participants will have the opportunity to experientially examine their stances on key issues and central dilemmas that are part of conflict resolution. This educational approach allows experts in the field a new experience in clarifying the basic issues and principles in as they relate to democratic principles. The course has been adapted to facilitate vibrancy, excitement and emotional verve in the virtual classroom.

Participants will receive a certificate upon course completion. This certificate allows graduates of the “Betzavta” training to facilitate this course to other groups; for those who are new to our innovative method, this course provides a window into the subject matter and process and allows for joining our group facilitation courses taught around the world in various countries and languages, including English, Arabic, Hebrew, German and Polish.
